Alcohol misuse affects individuals, families and the wider community. It impacts health and social care services, the criminal justice system, education, environment and housing services. The Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy for England emphasises the importance of local level delivery that suits local needs. Local authority scrutiny offers the opportunity for local leaders to explore the problems, gaps and issues specific to their areas and to come up with actions and suggestions for improvement. Local authorities can act as the catalyst to develop a wide range of levers for change such as local strategic partnerships, local health partnerships and crime and disorder reduction partnerships.
We work with scrutiny officers and panels to increase understanding of the issues and to inform the scrunity process. We advise where to find local evidence about alcohol misuse, what to look for from witnesses, how to assess local performance against good practice, and how alcohol misuse links to other strategic priorities.
